Walberton's® Plant Introductions
Walberton's new plant varieties are protected by Plant Patents in the USA and by Plant Breeders' Rights legislation in Europe and many other countries. During the period of protection, usually 20 to 25 years, they may be propagated only under license, and a royalty is charged on each plant to pay for the Walberton breeding programme. Licenses for Walberton's plants are issued by PlantHaven, Plants for Europe (PFE), and Genesis. See the Links page.
Farplants Promotions of Walberton's® Plants
In 1985 the Farplants group joined with Blakedown Nursery to form Pride of Place Plants® Ltd (a UK company now fully owned by Farplants) in order to carry out the first nationwide new plant promotion for Garden Centres.
The plant chosen for this promotion was a Scabious, grown by David Tristram in his garden in Ireland since the 1950's, and described by him as his Irish perpetual flowering Scabious. It was given the name in 1984 of Butterfly Blue Beauty, with the words "Butterfly Blue" trademarked in the UK. Since then it has become well known and loved throughout the world, and was chosen by the US Perennial Plants Association as their Plant of the Year for the year 2000. Now many millions of this scabious are sold each year worldwide and several equatorial countries are involved in growing the cutting material.
Its success was soon followed by a pink equivalent called Scabious Pink Mist, and since then many other popular plants have been bred at Walberton Nursery and then introduced and promoted by Farplants in the UK and by PlantHaven in the USA. These Walberton's plants include:
- Brachyglottis Silver Dormouse (WALBRACH)
- Coreopsis Flying Saucers (WALCOREOP)
- Choisya Moonshine (WALCHOI)
- Crocosmia Walberton Yellow (WALCROY)
- Cytisus Amber Elf (WALCYTELF) bred by Tim Crowther
- Erysimum Fragrant Sunshine (WALFRASUN)
- Lavender Silver Edge (WALVERA)
- Lysimachia Golden Alexander (WALGOLDALEX)
- Spiraea Magic Carpet (WALBUMA)
